Django in June

Housing & Food

The dorm is not just where we sleep at Django in June. In fact, some of us get very little sleep during the event! The dorms are our home base, where virtually all the classes, jamming and hanging out happen. If you want the full Django in June experience, including all the chance encounters, the impromptu jams, the opportunities for informal instruction and personal connection...stay in the dorms with us. It's where I all our staff stays; it's where the action is.

After several years in the same corner of campus (King and Scales), we'll be moving to new digs in Northop, Gillett and Talbot in 2012. While these buildings have many of the same features we've come to expect on the Smith campus—the spacious meeting rooms on the first floor, the lovely architectural features, the private rooms and welcoming outdoor jamming spaces nearby—our new dorm assignment does offer us one main advantage over King and Scales: proximity to town and to the dining hall. (They are, in fact, immediately adjacent to the dining hall we've used for the past three years.) So regardless of where you opt to take your meals, you're there, or darn close. The new dorms are also closer to Helen Hills Hills Chapel, where we hold our Friday and Saturday night performances.

Most of the upstairs rooms in these dorms are intended to be used as singles—that is, as private rooms—so we should be able to accomodate anyone who would prefer a private room. The new buildings do offer us a few more doubles than we have had in the past, though, so if you'd prefer to share a room with someone else do check on their availability. Please note that given the way we are charged by Smith (by the person, mostly) double rooms cost the same per person as a single. Also note that "double" rooms do not have double beds, but two singles. All rooms have shared bathrooms on the hallway.

While there may be rooms available for folks who show up unannounced, advance reservation of rooms — whether for Django Camp or the weekend — is strongly advised. This is a college campus after all, not a hotel. You can make these arrangements under Tickets and Registration.

We offer an on-campus meal plan for both Django Camp participants and those who join us for the entire weekend. The folks at Smith are happy to accomodate a variety of special dietary needs if advance arrangements are made. Sharing meals allows us to not only stay well-fed during our time here, but well-connected with each other. I strongly recommend going this route while you're here rather than fending for yourself, though eating in Northampton offers many fine options at various costs.
